Surface computers are commonly equipped with Surface Docks. By connecting a variety of external devices to the Surface Book, they improve the overall performance of the computer. Installing or updating the necessary drivers is the first step towards using the Surface Docks.
Microsoft Surface Dock Updater is one tool that simplifies this process because it updates the firmware automatically. There is, however, an error message that says “Failed to install SurfaceBaseFwUpdateDriver.dll.” when users try to update Microsoft Surface Dock.
What causes the failure to install SurfaceBaseFwUpdateDriver.dll on Microsoft Surface?
Surface Dock users are unable to update their Surface Dock because the error message cancels the installation. However, there are still some drawbacks when using another Surface device to update the Surface Dock. Launch the Surface Dock Updater (system)
- Here is where you can download Surface Dock Updater.
- The PSTools package can then be downloaded.
- Using the command prompt, right-click on the search result and unzip the zip file to your PC.
- Click the Yes button when prompted to run the application as Administrator.
- By pressing Enter, enter the following command:
PSEXEC -I -S
- This may open a new window of the command prompt.
- In the new window, enter the following command.
whoami
- Responses should include the command-nt authority/system.
- After that, navigate to the location on your PC where the Surface Dock Updater file is located.
- You should now enter the following command in the same command prompt window: (Replace NameOfInstaller with the actual name of the Surface Dock Updater).

- Once you have closed all windows, restart your computer to check if the problem has been resolved.
Configuring the Group Policy Editor
- The Run dialog box can be accessed by pressing Windows + R on the keyboard.
- Enter Gpedit.MSC.
- By clicking this, you will be able to access the Group Policy Editor on your local computer.
- To access the Windows Installer, go to Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components.
- Choosing the “Disable rollback” setting on the right side of the window will disable the rollback function.
- Select Enable by double-clicking it.
- Ensure that your changes are saved by clicking Apply, then OK.
- You will now be able to see a Surface Dock update after restarting your computer.
Reconnect the keyboard
Alternatively, you can simply disconnect (reconnect) the keyboard from the Microsoft Surface device. It is also possible that due to a bug in the software, some of the devices are conflicting with the software update of the connected device.
The Surface Dock needs to be gently removed from the Surface device using the Detach button on the keyboard. It should then be updated with the latest Surface Dock firmware using the Surface Dock Updater tool.
