A Windows update error code 0x80070002 occurs when you don’t have the necessary update files. This error may also occur when the Windows Update service is not functioning.

Code 8000FFFF + Code 3715 is in my Windows Update.  I have 36 updates which will not be installed.  Mr. FixIt did without touching!  I did research for months for a solution to the Code 8000FFFF, just to finally get 3 or 4 new files update.  They settled, but then the second error, Code 3715 appeared.  I have a Compaq PCSR5501P Tower, 3 GB of RAM and 4 GB ReadyBoost (at recommended setting) with Windows 32 bit Vista Home Basic SP2 and ESET Smart Security 5.  Also, I have a Seagate 2 TB external drive.  It was not connected during this period for months, then Windows Defender found a registry error about this.  I removed it to the Defender.  I consider myself to be a bit smarter than the average bear, but it beats me.  I know it’s 9 out of 10 times it simple!

What is the cause of Windows Update error code 8020002E?

Damaged WU component: In the most severe cases, this error code can be caused by a persistent WU error that cannot be resolved by traditional methods. Remove the SoftwareDistribution subfolder

1. The Run option can be found on the menu that appears when you press Windows + X.
2. Click Open and type services.msc.
3. In the properties window, double-click Windows Update.
4. Disabled is the startup type you want to choose from the drop-down menu.
5. Click Stop.
6. Click OK to exit the application after selecting the Apply option.

8. In File Explorer, open the Software Distribution & Data Warehouse folder.
9. The DataStore can be selected by pressing Ctrl+A.

Disabling third-party antivirus utilities

You may encounter error 8020002e when one of the antivirus programs you are using interferes with Windows Update. This error is often caused by antivirus programs such as Avast, Comodo, Sophos, or McAfee.

The issue can be fixed by disabling or uninstalling these antivirus programs before checking for updates. The option to deactivate your antivirus program can be found on the context menu of the antivirus program’s icon in the system tray.

Deactivating the Windows Defender firewall

Using Windows Defender without a third-party antivirus program may be a good option.

1. Type Microsoft.WindowsFirewall and click OK in the Run control.
2. In the applet on the left, you can enable or disable Windows Defender Firewall.
3. You can disable the Windows Defender Firewall here by selecting one of the two options.
4. To exit, click OK.
5. It is unlikely that this will solve the issue; at some point you will have to reactivate the Windows Defender Firewall. Start by resetting any WDF settings to their default from the Control Panel by clicking the Restore Defaults button.

Disabling a proxy server

Proxy servers should be disabled if you are using them.

1. The search function can be accessed from the taskbar by clicking “Enter Here”.
2. If you want to search for network status, enter it as the keyword.
3. Below the map is a window that shows Network Status.
4. From the left-hand menu, select Proxy.
5. You need to disable the option to use a proxy server.

Perform a system file scan

The 8020002e error can also be caused by a corrupt system file.

1. Windows 10’s search utility can be used to run a system file scan by typing cmd.
2. Using the right mouse click, select Run as administrator to open the advanced command line.
3. First, run the installation image maintenance management scan by typing DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /restore health and pressing Return.
4. Then type the command sfc / scan now and press Enter.
5. After these scans, restart Windows if you see a message saying something has been fixed.

Although these permissions are likely to fix errors like 8020002e, they aren’t guaranteed to work, so some users may have to update Windows with a repair installation.

As an alternative, the Reset This PC tool can be used to restore Windows 10 to factory settings.
