How to Repair uTorrent “Disk Overloaded” Error on Windows 10 PC

  • The “Disk Overload” error in uTorrent is often caused by incorrect settings of the program.
  • The most common cause of this problem is the way that uTorrent loads data inconsistently.
  • This approach puts a lot of stress on the hard drive because it has to write hundreds of chunks at the same time.
  • Another common scenario is when partial file mode is enabled, causing the disk to skip a large number of files.

Windows Temp Folder Huge

In my Windows 7 machine, the Windows Temp folder (C:/Windows/Temp) occupies 192 GB of space. In this folder you will find 1500+ files that are approximately 127 MB each. Can you delete these files?

Low Disk Space Meaning

An error message showing that a particular location on the hard drive has run out of space is called a low disk space warning in Windows OS. This error message keeps popping out frequently unless users take action to solve it. Low disk space warnings indicate that users need to improve the hard drive’s health urgently.

A description of the Temporary Storage Menu can be found in this document.

Torrent is the protocol, torrent files are .torrent files, and uTorrent is the software.

It has never occurred to me that uTorrent 1.6.1 has disk overload errors. I have been using it for ages and downloading large packs (200GB+) without any issues. My computer and homeserver (both Dual Core 2 Duo 2,5 & 2,7 GHz, 4 gigabytes of RAM) get that error when I try to add torrents. I had a 1.5TB HDD today and wanted to download a 50GB torrent pack.. Disk Overload 100% again.

In uTorrent, “Disk Overload” errors are often caused by incorrect cache settings. In some cases, these errors disappear without any further action.

Run Temp

If you use Windows XP or earlier, click the Run option in the Start menu and type %temp% in the Run field to view and delete temp files. Click the Run button and type %temp% in the Run field. Press Enter to open the temp folder. In this folder, you can delete all files as well as skip those that are in use.

In the last couple of minutes, I’ve had two problems with my torrent… it had been a normal day and everything was downloading perfectly when suddenly this error appeared that the process couldn’t access the file because it was being used by another process, and I tried to play the file for a few minutes, but then it crashed again.

When the download speed reaches a certain threshold in uTorrent, the Disk Overload Error occurs. Most of the time, it lasts about a minute (when the download drops) before it returns to normal. The error, however, usually recurs and returns within a couple of minutes in most cases.

In qBittorrent, when you close it and relaunch it, you will see the torrent listed under “Queued”.

The problem persists, however, for users who are trying to use uTorrent to download torrent files.

Windows/temp Folder Huge

This ‘temp’ folder in Windows’s temp folder (C:/Windows/Temp) is the culprit. It has 81 gigabytes of space, which is a lot more than normal. Question is, how can I delete this folder?

In Temp

During the hours of 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. EST on August 17th, InTempConnect will undergo necessary maintenance. All services will be unavailable during this time. If you need any data prior to the downtime, you can manually check your loggers for alarms. All functionality will return once maintenance is completed, so you will not be required to do anything further.

To fix the “uTorrent Disk Overloaded” error in Windows, we’re going to teach you some tips and tricks.

What causes the “uTorrent Disk Overloaded” error?

  • It is common for uTorrent users to experience “Disk Overloaded” errors because the client downloads and uploads songs inconsistently. The hard drive is put under much greater strain during such a transfer than it is during a local transfer, since it is forced to read and write hundreds of randomly selected file fragments simultaneously.
  • Due to uTorrent’s inconsistency in loading data, this issue often leads to random errors on the hard drive. Multiple chunks have to be written at the same time, which places a lot of stress on it.
  • Another common scenario for this problem is when partial file mode is enabled, causing the disk to skip a large number of files. This problem has been fixed in newer versions, but if you don’t want to upgrade, you can get around the problem by going into advanced settings and setting it to false.

A torrent file is called uTorrent.exe and is located at C:/Users/MediaCenter/AppData/Roaming/uTorrent/uTorrent.exe.

Now although that was the last option in uTorrent 3.2.2 some of you may be using older versions of uTorrent which also include the option to disable Windows Read and Write Caching. I would suggest you to tick those and disable the Windows Caching because you’ve already set a very large and well utilised cache in uTorrent and it is unnecessary and problematic to also utilise the Windows Caching. In the event that your PC were to crash for example Windows may still be holding over 1 GB of file pieces that uTorrent considered already written to disk and when you open your client again you’ll find that some downloads didn’t get completely saved to disk and will need to be checked for missing pieces.

In other words, you can disable Windows Write Cache by using whatever method you are familiar with.

Set Diskio.use_partfile to False

  1. The Settings menu can be accessed using the method described above.
  2. You can find it in the left pane of the Settings menu by clicking the Advanced tab.
  3. Find the value by going to Filter and pasting diskio.use_partfile into it.
  4. Next, go to the name that you want and double-click it. The value will automatically be set to False.
  5. Your changes will be saved when you click Apply.

Increasing the size of the base cache

  1. On the left pane of the Settings menu, click Advanced.
  2. You can manually set the size of the cache by clicking the Override automatic cache size checkbox on the Disk Cache tab.
  3. Click Apply to save changes to Disk Cache.

Enable preallocation of all files

  1. On the top tool bar of uTorrent, launch the client.
  2. The Settings menu can be found under the Options section.
  3. The Preassign all files box can be found under the When downloading section on the right side of the screen.
  4. This operation can be completed by clicking Apply.
  5. It is now possible to restart the uTorrent client to check if a fix has been found for the “uTorrent Disk Cache Overloaded” error.
