You can disable the toggle switch that lets Microsoft Edge run background apps even if the browser is closed.

On Windows, Edge appears in your taskbar, hidden behind the arrow icon. The icon indicates that Edge is still running. By clicking the icon, a pop-up menu appears showing which extensions and apps are in use.

  1. By clicking Close Microsoft Edge, you can temporarily close Microsoft Edge in order to keep it running in the background until you open it again.
  2. The Edge icon will stay in your notification area if you do not disable this feature completely by selecting the “Keep Microsoft Edge in the background” option.
  3. Edge’s settings can be found by clicking the three dots in the upper right corner when it is launched on a computer running a non-Windows operating system.
  4. To disable this feature, go to the settings page and click on “System” in the left pane. Instead of “Continue running apps in the background when Microsoft Edge is closed,” toggle it to “Off.”
  5. Press Enter to go straight to settings by pasting edge://settings/system into the address bar.

In the Settings – System menu, you can check “Keep apps running in the background when Microsoft Edge is closed” to On to enable Edge to run in the background again.

You will be able to run apps in the background less frequently after you have disabled this option, thereby increasing the battery life of your computer and freeing up computer resources.
