Shortcuts are a great way to reduce click and scroll time when browsing and working. I recently came to this conclusion when using shortcuts to invoke zooming because I didn’t have a physical mouse, and relying on a mouse pad on my laptop seemed like a real headache. Since I work mostly online, I use Google Chrome, and yes, I tend to use a lot of Chrome keyboard shortcuts to control my tabs. Recently, however, the Chrome keyboard shortcuts weren’t working, and I was curious to see how I could fix the problem. As I found out, you don’t have to waste time searching the Internet on your own.

Google Chrome Shortcuts On Desktop

The easiest way to create a desktop shortcut to a website in Google Chrome is to visit the website, click the three-dot icon at the top-right side of your browser window, and then select More tools and Shortcuts.

Add Chrome Shortcut To Desktop

Most browsers allow you to create shortcuts, but Microsoft Edge does not.

Click Create Shortcut, located under Tools, after you load a website.

Click about Google Chrome under the Chrome menu, then click Help. Before continuing, make sure Chrome is updated to the latest version.

If you are using Chrome, make sure you have updated it to the latest version. Click Help > About Google Chrome to do this.

Why is the Chrome Create shortcut not working

Why is the Chrome Create shortcut not working

Changing Chrome as default in Windows 10 was done by clicking Make default under Chrome settings instead of setting Chrome as default under Settings > Apps > Default apps. The default web browser in Windows 10 has to be manually changed under Settings or Default Programs. The default search engine must be set manually by users in Windows 10, since third-party browsers or software cannot set itself as the default browser.

Some users of Windows 10 have reported issues with shortcuts since the system update. Shortcuts for apps appeared to be ineffective and wouldn’t launch the associated programs.

How To Create A Shortcut On Google Chrome

Your desktop will be automatically converted into a shortcut to the web page, so you won’t have to open Google Chrome separately.

A shortcut to a website can be saved to the desktop using Google Chrome. However, the icon it adds to the desktop is a scaled up version of a 16×16 version. This icon is actually an icon file that contains several resolutions and is stored in the website root. The favicon does not appear in the header. The icon file appears to work. The larger icons are displaying correctly in IE.

It can be extremely frustrating if the Chrome shortcut on Windows 10 doesn’t work because you can’t access this software easily.

Some users report dissatisfaction due to Windows 10’s troubleshooting tools, which have not found solutions to these problems on their systems.

Not being able to use keyboard shortcuts can be a big problem, and this article will discuss the issue. These errors can easily be fixed, and in this guide by Techquack, we’ll show you how.

To fix the Chrome Create shortcut problem

Method 1

Occasionally, you will find that the Create Shortcut button is grayed out in Chrome if you are using an incognito window or guest window. To fix the problem, you have to open a regular Chrome window. Open the Chrome menu, then click New Window to switch to incognito viewing mode.

  1. You should find an option to Create shortcut without issue when you load the website you want to shortcut.
  2. You can access the Create Shortcut option again if you reload the website in a regular Chrome window after exiting guest mode by clicking on the guest profile icon and selecting Exit Guest Mode.
  3. Chrome intentionally restricts creation of shortcuts on internal Chrome pages (such as the Settings page), so the “Create Shortcuts” option will always appear grayed out.

Method 2

Shortcuts to webpages open in a separate window without menus, tabs, or other browser components when they are created. Since the Standalone window option isn’t available in all versions of Windows, you can also set the Chrome shortcut to open as the default web page in a new browser tab.

  1. You will be able to navigate to the web page once you open the Chrome web browser.
  2. To access the Chrome menu, locate the three vertical-aligned dots on the top right-hand corner of the browser.
  3. You can choose between adding a shortcut to your desktop, creating a shortcut or creating an application shortcut (the option you select depends on your operating system).
  4. Leave the shortcut’s name as the website’s name, or enter something unique.
  5. For desktop shortcuts, select Create.

Other ways of creating web page shortcuts that work in Chrome include:

Method 3

  1. Click the address bar to highlight the URL.
  2. Your computer should automatically open a folder when you drag the shortcut.

Method 4

  1. Choose Shortcut from the New menu when you right-click on the desktop.
  2. Click on Next after you enter the URL.
  3. Select Done after naming the shortcut.

Method 5

  1. Go to the desktop shortcut and select it.
  2. The shortcut will appear on the taskbar if you drag it there.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you have "Open a specific page or set of pages," shortcuts may not work. So try selecting something else, like "Open New Tabbed Page", quit Chrome, and then try double-clicking that shortcut on the desktop again. Let's hope it all works out!

Some users have reported that a simple check of system files with this program can fix the shortcuts problem on the desktop right away: press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to launch Task Manager. Select File and start a new task. Check the box next to Create this task with administrative privileges.

  1. In the upper right corner of Google Chrome, click the 3-point extension menu.
  2. Expand the "Other Tools" menu.
  3. Click on the "Extensions" button.
  4. Scroll to the extension you want and select the keyboard shortcut with "Ctrl" or "Ctrl + Shift" and any available keys.

Note: Desktop shortcuts also tend to stop working, usually due to the wrong path to the executable program they were supposed to run. If you uninstalled a particular program, you have no choice but to remove the shortcut.
