Fixed Folder Redirection did not update to a new server

  • It is typically used in a networked office environment to ensure that users do not store data locally when a network device is a preferred location.
  • Redirection allows data to be stored regardless of location and separates user data from profile data, reducing logon times.

Redirected Folders Permissions

According to Microsoft’s best practices, these permissions should be set on your Microsoft-redirected folders.

Windows 10 Folder Redirection

A folder redirection is a method of keeping a profile folder in a network location or to a local computer. This article explains how to do it. The data you need is typically stored on your local profile, so you can access it no matter what computer you are on by redirecting folders.

In this article, the problem of folders not redirected after folder redirection is discussed.

Microsoft Windows operating systems support folder redirection as a way to use storage space on other networks instead of default folders (directories).

What Is Folder Redirection

When automatically redirecting I/O from standard folders (directories) on a network to other storage locations through Microsoft Windows, this is known as Folder Redirection.

Folder Redirection Permissions

Folder redirection maps a local user folder to another location (either another local disk or a network path). This saves much storage space consumed on each local machine as well as provides roaming functionality for each domain user. Folder redirection applies to both domain joined workstations as well as to any user accessing an Active Directory environment using a VDI/SBC solution, such as Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops. In the case of on-premise domain-joined PCs, the redirected folders are from the local workstation. In the case of Citrix or other DaaS solution, the redirected folders are from the Citrix VDA (or equivalent) servers.

It solves a critical problem: quickly setting up user sessions on stateless machines by using the folder redirection technology, which has been part of Windows for more or less a while. In light of these circumstances, it would seem likely that people understand the use cases and caveats and are generally in agreement about what to do and what not to do. In fact, that isn’t the case.

Data can be stored regardless of location using folder redirection, focusing on user data and separating profile data from user data, making logon times shorter.

In an environment with two DCs: An SBS 2011 server, and a Server 2019 server, I intend to move folder redirection files from the old to the new (I know it isn’t best practices to have files stored on a DC, but right now I just need this functioning for the time being). There is a pre-existing GPO called ” Small Business Server Folder Redirection Policy”. It redirects users’ Documents and Desktops to the UNC share: \\OLDSERVER\RedirectedFolders. (his refers to the same location as \\OLDSERVER\Data\Users Shared Folders by the way) I set up DFS replication so that the \\OLDSERVER\Data share is replicated to \\NEWSERVER\Data. Then I changed the redirection GPO to point to the new UNC share on the DFS namespace: \\company.local\dfs1\Data\Users Shared Folders, and… nothing happened.

There are also the following benefits:

  • A server stores data and allows backups.
  • A single location is used to store all data when the same redirect is used by multiple users.
  • Rather than sharing data on individual workstations, users can share data directly from the server.
  • Admins can spend less on disks for workstations and more on those for file servers by using this product.
  • A redirected user folder and disable caching further protect data from theft when no files are stored on the workstation.

Why are redirected folders not updated to the new server?

Why are redirected folders not updated to the new server?

Some folders get redirected upon login, but others don’t.

When your computer runs Windows Vista or Server 2008, folder redirection is enabled. You will be logged in immediately when your computer restarts. If the Workstation service does not start before displaying the desktop, one of the following problems occurs:

Documents, Pictures, Music, and Desktop folders are not visible when you attempt to access the redirected folders.

Redirect Documents Folder

In GPO, the Documents folder is configured with Folder Redirection as shown below;

Group Policy provides folder redirection options. If the Workstation service is running, these options are available.

The known folder cache will not be available if the Workstation service is not running. Therefore, requests will fail at folder redirects. Additionally, until the next update, the cache will not be available. Upon first login, this cache is automatically built and updated every 12 minutes.

How do I fix the folder redirection problem?

Solution

  1. Group policy updates should be made
  2. By pressing Windows + R, you can
  3. Click Group Policy Editor and type gpedit.MSC
  4. Make sure the folder redirection policy is applied to the computers users log in to.
  5. Edit the GPO
  6. Ensure the Administrative Templates section is expanded under Computer Configuration.
  7. The System template can be found under Administrative Templates.
  8. Select “Group Policy” under “System”.
  9. You can process Folder Redirection Policies by double-clicking them.
  10. You can enable it by selecting it.
  11. The second checkbox should be selected.
  12. The Editor for Group Policy Objects will be closed

The Group Policy Object Editor that comes with Windows 10 isn’t available by default. To get it, go here. Using this editor, you can force an update to Group Policy that will start relocating folders correctly.

Setup Folder Redirection

Choose Folder Redirection under User Configuration, then Policies, then Windows Settings, in the Group Policy Management Editor window.

Redirection Not Working

You might be adding the rewrite rules to your WordPress plugin as well as the cPanel “Redirects” tool if your 301 redirect is not working.

Note: Because this step affects group policies, it is best that the system administrator perform this operation. This is because he will be performing this repair on multiple PCs at the same time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Simply delete the applicable folder forwarding policy and set it to copy the files to the local machine when you delete them. Then change the folder forwarding policy to point to the new location. Then the group policy processing will move all the files for you after two logins.

If you need to reset permissions on a user folder, you must first get ownership of the entire folder, then reset the permissions, and finally reassign ownership to the user. Although this can be done through the GUI, if you need to do this for many users, you need to develop a script.

  1. Run regedit.exe.
  2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftsoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerUser Shell Folders.
  3. Double-click Personal (for My Documents) and change the value.
  4. Double-click My Pictures and change the value.
  5. Case Closed.
  6. Log off and restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Folder redirection remains a popular method of managing user data and profiles because it can improve the user experience by doing two things: logging in faster - redirecting application data from a profile reduces the amount of data that must be copied locally when users log in.
